DA dismisses conspiracies in Pelosi attack, charges expected

Image
WASHINGTON (AP) — The San Francisco District Attorney is rejecting conspiracy theories about the attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband , confirming the assailant was targeting the Democratic leader when he broke into the couple’s San Francisco home and confronted Paul Pelosi. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins is expected to formally announce charges Monday against David DePape, 42, who shouted out “Where is Nancy?” before police said he struck the speaker’s 82-year-old husband with a hammer. DePape was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, elder abuse and other charges. “At the time that the suspect had entered the Pelosi home that he was in fact, looking for Ms. Pelosi,” Jenkins told reporters late Sunday in San Francisco. “The other thing is we want to make it clear that there were only two people in the home at the time that the police arrived, Mr. Pelosi and the suspect, there was no third person present,” she said. “We have nothing to suggest that these two men knew...

Gov. Hochul, you're the real 'data denier' on surging crime

Image
Gov. Kathy Hochul is now openly spreading absurd conspiracy theories about crime, claiming Republican “master manipulators” and “data deniers” want you to falsely think red states are safer than blue ones like New York. Of course, she’s the real data-denier “Master manipulators,” she said Sunday, “have this conspiracy going” to “convince people in Democratic states that they’re not as safe.” But “the safer places are the Democratic states.” Her plunge in the polls has her resorting to bald-faced lies: She knows Democratic cities — Philadelphia, Chicago, New Orleans and, yes, New York — drive up state murder rates, as crime expert Raphael Mangual documented in The Post. (With hard data.) For example, New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport, all run by Democratic mayors, had a collective murder rate in 2019 of 28.1 per 100,000, more than three times the 8.3-per-100,000 rate in the rest of Louisiana. That drove up the statewide count by 41%, to 11.7 per 100,000. Among the 50 largest ...

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump is lashing out at the judge handling the New York attorney general's fraud lawsuit against him and his company, calling him “vicious, biased, and mean” in a social media post just days before the case’s first court hearing. The former president, who has been on the losing side of Judge Arthur Engoron’s rulings in the past, coupled Friday’s criticism with complaints that — as a politician — he shouldn't be forced to deal with legal action until after the midterm elections on Nov. 8. In a separate case, opening statements are set for Monday in the Trump Organization’s criminal tax fraud trial following the completion of jury selection on Friday. Trump, who has been laying groundwork for a possible comeback run for president in 2024, grumbled in a post on his Truth Social platform about having to deal with simultaneous court action on the eve of an election that could put Republicans back in control of one or both houses of Congress. “In breaking with ...

Elon Musk Amplifies Baseless Conspiracy Theory in Pelosi Attack

Patrick Pleul/AFP via Getty Just days after he promised advertisers that Twitter would not become a “ free-for-all hellscape ,” Elon Musk used the platform he now owns to amplify a baseless conspiracy theory about the hammer attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband by an intruder. “There is a tiny possibility there might be more to this story than meets the eye,” Musk tweeted Sunday morning in reply to a tweet by Hillary Clinton blasting the Republican Party for creating a toxic environment that lays the groundwork for violence against politicians. Conspiracy-Addled Intruder Allegedly Tried to Tie Up Paul Pelosi, Asked ‘Where’s Nancy?’ Musk linked out to a story, which is no longer accessible, in an online conservative rag called the Santa Monica Observer claiming that the suspect did not break into the Pelosis’ San Francisco home hunting for Nancy. Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard is facing a hefty lawsuit after a woman came forward alleging he knowingly gave her genital herpes — an incurable sexually transmitted disease. The woman filed the lawsuit anonymously Thursday in Broward County Circuit Court, and is seeking damages in excess of $30,000. She’s also demanding the suit be heard in front of a jury, according to court documents. Howard, a second-round pick with the Dolphins in the 2016 Draft, is one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL. His 27 career interceptions since entering the league are the most by any player in that time span. The pair first met in early 2018 at a Quest Diagnostics laboratory, where Howard asked her on a date, the lawsuit read. At the beginning of their relationship, he told her that he had no STDs, even showing his negative test results. In 2019, Howard learned he had contracted genital herpes but did not tell the woman, according to the suit. Instead, he proceeded to stand by his assertion that...

Zeldin and Hochul outline drastically different visions for New York in only gubernatorial debate – The Legislative Gazette

Image
Legislative Gazette image by Christian Evanko. Cover photo courtesy of Spectrum News. Republican challenger Lee Zeldin and Democratic incumbent Kathy Hochul faced off in the only scheduled gubernatorial debate for New York, hosted live by Spectrum News 1 .  The debate took place at Pace University in Manhattan live from the Schimmel Theater and was hosted by Spectrum political anchors Erol Louis of Inside City Hall and Susan Arbetter of Capitol Tonight.  The two candidates laid out starkly different visions for the future of New York, with the topics of public safety, abortion rights, economic development, homelessness and environmental protection emerging repeatedly throughout the hour-long debate. Former President Donald Trump played a role in the spirited discussion, as did Hochul’s predecessor Andrew Cuomo. Hochul frequently brought up Zeldin’s close ties to Trump and his vote against certifying the election for Biden on January 6, 2022, while Zeldin promised to investigat...

(Joshua Roberts/Reuters) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi was “violently assaulted” in their San Francisco home early Friday morning, her office said. “Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi,” Drew Hammill, spokesman for Nancy Pelosi, said in a statement . “The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation. Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery." Nancy Pelosi was not in San Francisco at the time of the incident. “The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time,” Hammill added. On April 10, 2021, Orlando Police Officers Sebastian Woods Mariano and Alexander Ham conducted a traffic stop of a U-Haul truck after they witnessed the U-Haul run a red light. The stop was rather uneventful, apart from the reality that the pair had stopped their own agency's manager of Internal Affairs, Dwain Rivers. Asked is he had any 'drugs, guns, or stolen kids' in his U-Haul truck, Rivers replied "Just furniture." Which seems to have been satisfactory to Officer Mariano... whose body camera was sideways. ~~~ /r/realworldpolice @realworldpolice @What You Haven't Seen source https://corruptionbycops.com/two-police-officers-stop-the-head-of-internal-affairs/

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol issued a subpoena Friday to Donald Trump, exercising its subpoena power against the former president who lawmakers say “personally orchestrated” a multi-part effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The nine-member panel issued a letter to Trump's lawyers, demanding his testimony under oath by Nov. 14 and outlining a request for a series of corresponding documents, including personal communications between the former president and members of Congress as well as extremist groups. “We recognize that a subpoena to a former President is a significant and historic action," Chairman Bennie Thompson and Vice Chair Liz Cheney wrote in the letter to Trump. “We do not take this action lightly.” It is unclear how Trump and his legal team will respond to the subpoena. He could comply or negotiate with the committee, announce he will defy the subpoena or ignore it altogether. He could also...

Illinois corruption is infamous. From Chicago aldermen with nicknames like Fast Eddie, Bathhouse and Hinky Dink. To imprisoned governors like Rod Blagojevich and George Ryan. To the Richard J. Daley machine and its most prolific political products: Ed Burke and Michael Madigan. But what makes Illinois so corrupt? Scholars like University of Illinois-Chicago Professor Dick Simpson have argued corruption is a cultural problem in Illinois. Rather than a culture of public service and integrity, Chicago and Illinois politicians from both parties see public office as a means for their own private gain. That culture is real and systemic, and comes both from two places: leadership and institutions. BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — Three U.N. peacekeepers from Chad have been killed in northern Mali after a roadside bomb exploded as the men approached on foot and several others were seriously wounded, officials said Monday. Their deaths come just one day before the U.N. Security Council is holding a meeting on the mission in Mali, which was the United Nations’ most dangerous even before the French military pulled its remaining troops from the country in August. The U.N. peacekeeping mission known as MINUSMA confirmed on its Twitter account that two peacekeepers died at the scene. An official within the U.N. mission, who requested anonymity as they are not allowed to speak to journalists, confirmed that another seriously wounded peacekeeper later died from his injuries. The explosion Monday took place 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the town of Tessalit in Kidal region. Islamic extremists are known to place improvised explosive devices in the area, the official said. When the U.N. patrol arrived at...

Preventing violence against women and girls should be considered as much of a priority as counter-terrorism, county lines and organised crime, a police watchdog has suggested. The comments came as a root-and-branch examination by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) found “problems, unevenness and inconsistencies” in dealing with the “epidemic” of violence against female victims in the UK. The watchdog said the police response to such offences and victims “has improved” in the last five years but said there remained concerns, including the “staggering variation” in the way domestic abuse was dealt with across police forces in England and Wales. Asked whether violence against women and girls should be treated by police equally to counter-terrorism, ZoĆ« Billingham, HM inspector of constabulary, said: “These are very different crime and the tactics for preventing and disrupting these crimes are very different. “But it is undeniable if...

"He walked in unobstructed initially," Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Regional Director Victor Escalon said. "So from the grandmother's house, to the (ditch), to the school, into the school, he was not confronted by anybody." A DPS representative on Wednesday said a school resource officer had "engaged" with the suspect before he went in the school. In his comments, Escalon said that the suspect, Salvador Ramos, shot his grandmother and then wrecked his truck in a ditch outside the school at 11:28 a.m. He exited the truck with a rifle and shot at two people across the street, Escalon said. He then approached the school and shot at the building multiple times and walked in through an apparently unlocked door at 11:40 a.m., according to Escalon. That door is normally locked, "unless you are leaving to go home on the school bus," former principal Ross McGlothlin told CNN's Newsroom on Thursday. There was no school resource officer...

LONDON (AP) — This day, this match, had to come, of course, for Roger Federer, and for tennis, just as it inevitably must for every athlete in every sport. Federer was bidding farewell Friday night with one last contest before he heads into retirement at age 41 after an illustrious career that included 20 Grand Slam titles and a role as a statesman for tennis. He was scheduled to play a doubles match alongside his rival Rafael Nadal for Team Europe in the Laver Cup against Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock of Team World. “For me, just personally, (it was) sad in the first moment, when I came to the conclusion it’s the best decision,” Federer said in an interview with The Associated Press this week about his emotions when realizing it was time to go. “I kind of held it in at first, then fought it off. But I could feel the pain.” When the players from both squads were introduced before the initial singles matchup of the three-day team event at the O2 Arena, Federer was the last to emerge from...
